Welcome

Welcome to Erick's Models. This is my place to show the models I've built and explain how I built them. I may not be the world's best modeler, but I have a good amount of experience. I've split my site into three sections. The first section is the Gallery. I have many of the models that I have built and previews of what I am going to build. The second section is for my Paper Models. I've built some, designed some, and even have a few tutorials on how to make paper models from certain computer games. And last is a small section where you'll find my Tips and Advice. I don't have a lot of advice that you can't find elsewhere, but I have a few good tings to look at. There are also a few other things scattered around, so feel free to look around.

So, browse around and have fun. I try to update the site whenever I get more to put on here. Of course, this is just a hobby, so work and life can prevent me from doing a lot to my site. But I try to update it every once in a while, so check back from time to time. And finally, if you have any questions or comments feel free to .

What's New

Updated July 17, 2010

I've dropped the video game habit (for the time being) and now I'm working on models again! YAY! I beat Super Mario Galaxy 2 the first two ways, and I'm working on the "Green Star Challenge," but only when my daughters want to watch me play. Getting 120 stars was hard enough, and now you want me to find 120 more? Seriously?

No, I'm kidding. It's actually a really good game. The 3D elements and game play are top notch. None of the many worlds had repeat game play, and each was a unique challenge. I enjoyed it a lot.

But like I said I'm back to modeling. And reading again. We got on Swap Tree and found that there are people who would love to trade old books, games, and movies with you! Wow! All you have to do is pay shipping and a small monthly fee. Talk about a deal-and-a-half! We've gotten several books, which are in great shape, for less than $20. I've got a whole list of books in there that I want, and it really cuts down on the cost of books.

Oh yeah, modeling. First off, is Alyssa's latest model, the Space Shuttle. It's a nice little model, and she's happy that we made it. Also, I'd like to say it is hot in the garage. (I mean, well, it is summer.) You see, that's where I do my work now, but I am working again! Take a look in the Previews for some of the work I've been doing. I got some work done on that old Robotech Defenders kit, and I started working on two models of the YQM-98A. (It is obviously the predecessor to the Global Hawk, which I fly now days.) I'm working on a plastic model (in the painting stage), and a paper model (in the test-building phase).

And speaking on UAVs, I've wanted to make several UAVs to go with the ones I've flown, and I'm blown away at what technology we had up to 40-50 years ago that we essentially threw away. I mean things like the Ryan Model 147 was a very early version of the Predator, and used extensively in Vietnam, but set aside because it was the only 'RPV' program and not worth the cost to maintain it. Two companies made UAVs that were designed to fly for more than 24 hours (only one proved it could) and perform round the clock reconnaissance, but because we couldn't figure out a good way to use it. Someone comes up with the idea for inline skates in 1951, but they don't become popular until the 1990s. And how long will we have to wait for someone to realize the true potential behind this?!?

Ok, the last one was a bad example, but you get the point. It always takes some catalyst to bring great ideas to the forefront where people can see how great they really are. That's how submarines (Germans WWI), rockets (Germans in WWII), carriers (everyone in WWII), Radar (again WWII), UAVs (Bosnian War, with the help of OEF an OIF), and the Poleil Pasta Maker (kitchens everywhere) all got their real starts. Ok, not so much the last one. But you get my point. (It does make good pasta though.)

What I'm Working On

So, for those of you who are new here, I had switched to one focus: doing models. Unfortunately, it was really more like "playing video games." I've managed to extract myself from the video game trap I was in and I am working on a couple models right now. I'm also in the process of cranking out a paper model or two for download. It just depends on what I feel like doing. If I'm not playing video games, that is. Or reading another new book.

Here's the ever changing list. Hopefully I won't get side tracked yet again.

  • Teledyne Ryan YQM-98A Compass Cope-R
  • Lockheed C-141B Starlifter
  • Robotech Defender's Condar
  • Robotech Defender's Gartan
  • Enterprise-A
  • America's Manned Space Rockets
